WHERE TO STAY
Our local hotels are bare bones.
Monticello New York is about 10 minutes from us. Many patients like the Best Western Motel there. Monticello has a Shoprite, Walmart and dining from Greek (Yannis.. with freshly made french and sweet potato fries daily) to diner (Blue Horizon.. ask for Torguis home-made felafal on a pita) to Italian (Brother Brunos, Bueno Fortuna) to a Subway, Dunkin Donuts, KFC, Burger King (yay, veggie burgers!), MickeyD’s, Chinese etc., and Taco Bell! and a Home Depot. Just sayin…
Monticello also has the Racino and racetrack. We sometimes go there on Saturday (live band) nights to dance. It’s not fancy but it exists and that’s a big thing in a smaller town. No cover, nice folks.
You probably want to stay in Monticello if you are using taxis for transport.
Enterprise Auto Rentals in Monticello NY is great as they will come to your hotel and pick you up and drop you off if you took a car service to your hotel. Check their hours as they close at 6pm and on Sundays, early on Saturday. Also they don’t keep an inventory for walk-ins.
For better hotels more traffic and endless restaurants, malls, theaters, you may then want to stay in…
Middletown New York is 30 minutes from us and has a
And many more hotels. Tons of great stuff. Indian restaurant is Saffron (yum! try the cauliflower appetizer), couple of Ruby Tuesdays.. and.. everything else including a large mall.
Mohonk Mountain House is a beauty! It’s an hour away and may or may not be practical with the driving however… you may want to book a dinner there and enjoy the rocking chairs on the endless verandas overlooking their lake and surrounding mountain areas. (click on the link to see pictures).

White Lake Restaurants
About 25 minutes west is White Lake, NY. Dine on a deck on the lake at Benji n Jakes (brick overn whole-wheat pizza), The Fat Lady Cafe (the veggie lasagna is great). Fat lady is open on weekends during the winter Benji n Jakes is closed for the winter but a new restaurant directly next door is getting kudos.
ALWAYS CALL AHEAD TO ENSURE THEY ARE OPEN. SAME WITH THE WOODSTOCK MUSEUM, ETC.
The Pickled Owl Gastropub – get wild with bare marrow or deviled egg appetizers, rabbit, fresh fish n chips and a few curveballs. Plus stuff for us suedo-veggies. Great food and something for everyone.
Frankie and Johnies – Giant meals great food (Italian).

Yannis is our fave, Greek Cafe feels like home. Inexpensive, delicious, friendly. Say hi to Dimitri, we send him people from around the country/world most days.
